Steel exported from the UK to France has skyrocketed in the last two years.
The UK is now exporting 1.6 million tonnes a year to France, compared to just 548,000 tonnes in the first half of 2016.
That compares to just 12,000 in the same period last year.
That has been driven by a surge in demand from China, as the Chinese government has been buying up steel from overseas.
This week, the French government announced plans to import up to 8 million tonnes of steel from the US and Italy this year.
This is a significant increase on the 1.5 million tonnes imported last year and has been supported by the lifting of import duties on steel imports from China.
It is likely that these two new imports will see the UK’s steel industry gain an additional 200,000 jobs over the next three years, according to the Royal Society. Read more
