With more than 50,000 metric tons of steel produced annually, Canada is the world’s biggest steel producer and recycler.
But the country also has the second-largest waste of all the major industrialized nations, behind only the United States, according to a report released Monday.
The Globe and Mail’s Robert MacDougall explores how Canada is leading the way in recycling.
In its report, the Canadian Association of Metals, a trade group, said steel is a critical part of the country’s industrial economy and that it has been a major contributor to Canadian exports to the United Kingdom and the United Arab Emirates.
The Canadian Association for Metals said Canada produces nearly half of the world market for the metal and it’s a key contributor to the countrys export-driven industrial economy.
The group said Canada’s steel industry is responsible for more than $1.4 trillion in value for Canadian businesses and businesses in Canada.
Steel exports accounted for about 14 per cent of Canadas exports in 2015, while the United Steelworkers Union estimated that Canada exported $1 billion worth of steel in 2015.
According to the report, Canada produces approximately 4.2 million metric tons a year of steel, of which roughly one million metric tonnes is steel made domestically.
That amounts to an annual production of about 18.3 million tons.
That’s a lot of steel.
That steel is also exported in other ways.
Canada exports about 7.3 billion metric tons to countries outside the United Nations and is responsible, according the report.
“The Canadian steel industry contributes to Canadian competitiveness and exports more steel products to other nations than any other industrialized nation, and its contribution is important to the success of the steel industry in Canada,” the report states.
It also says Canada is one of the top exporters of iron ore to the U.S. and has exported about 2.2 billion metric pounds of iron to the world since 2009.
“This industry is important in terms of the jobs and the value that is created in Canada, and it is important for the economy as a whole,” said Steve J. Walfish, president of the Canadian Iron and Steel Association.
“I think we can look forward to another big year for the industry.”
The report also found that the country is one the largest importers of imported steel, with imports from the United Sates at $3.2 trillion.
That represents an annual import of about $500 million.
“It’s just a shame that we are one of those countries that has so much waste,” said Walfisaid.
“We have an opportunity to create a sustainable future.”
